Makgadikgadi Pans

This live camera shows Kalahari Salt Pan in Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana.

In partnership with Natural Selection Foundation and Explore.org, this live camera captures one of Africa’s most extraordinary wilderness areas - where endless horizons, desert-adapted wildlife, and the world’s second-largest zebra migration meet. From dry season mirages to summer storms, every moment tells the story of life thriving against the odds.

The Makgadikgadi Pan (Tswana pronunciation [makχʰadiˈkχʰaːdi]), is a salt pan situated in the middle of the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana, is one of the largest salt flats in the world. The pan is all that remains of the formerly enormous Lake Makgadikgadi, which once covered an area larger than Switzerland, but dried up tens of thousands of years ago.
