Tau is situated on the far northern border of South Africa, in a beautiful area known as the Groot Marico, in the Madikwe Game Reserve. There are frequent sightings of elephant, white and black rhino, lion, cheetah, spotted & brown hyena, buffalo, leopard, zebra, endangered wild dog, giraffe, ostrich and warthog.

Madikwe Game Reserve is a protected area in South Africa and was named after the Madikwe or Marico River, on whose basin it is located. It comprises 750 km2 (290 sq mi) of bushland north of the small town of Groot-Marico up to the border with Botswana.
